Lower School

  • Art Class

    Lower School students are taught art history, expression, creativity, and the value of diversity through weekly art classes.  Students are exposed to different cultures and different mediums in each grade level.  Skills such as drawing, painting, hand molding clay, weaving, and others are taught.  Students are encouraged to stretch their imagination and explore new methods of creativity.

Intermediate School

  • Art Class

    Fifth grade artists study, analyze, and model art from around the world, and sixth grade students focus on art history which coordinates with their history class.  Students are given the opportunity to explore various different media and methods including photography, printmaking, sculpting, weaving, fabric, painting, and drawing.  Art classes meet on alternating days.

Middle School

  • Art Class

    Middle School students will continue to build their art vocabulary.  Principles of art criticism will be introduced as students begin to describe and analyze works of art.  Students will be able to explore more 2D and 3D methods including metal work and wood work.  Additionally, technology is heavily integrated into the middle school art curriculum.  Art classes meet daily.  Middle school art students are involved in VASE and PSIA competitions during the school year.

Upper School

  • Beginning 2D Art: Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking

    In Beginning 2D Art, emphasis is placed on mastering the fundamentals of drawing and design. Students learn basic drawing techniques and the appropriate use of visual elements and principles of design. Techniques of the masters are studied in conjunction with historical background of the artist or style. Basic printmaking techniques will be introduced, and students will paint with acrylic, watercolor, and oil paints.  Students are encouraged to compete in various national art competitions as well as Texas VASE and TAPPS contests.
  • Advanced 2D Art

    Advanced art students study independently, creating paintings, collages, drawings, and prints while being challenged to stretch their skills and explore new methods of creativity.  This course stresses experimentation. Students combine media and juxtapose ideas and techniques.  Students explore the development of themes and content.  Aesthetics and art criticism are addressed through discussion and critiques.  Students are encouraged to compete in various national art competitions as well as Texas VASE and TAPPS contests.
  • AP Studio Art: 2D

    Advanced Placement Studio Art: 2-D is designed for the student who has reached a considerable level of skill in a number of media and who can demonstrate a high degree of independent artistic judgment.  A 2-D portfolio will be assembled.  Student portfolios are reviewed by college, university, and secondary school art instructors using rigorous standards.  This College Board program provides the only national standard for performance in the visual arts that allows students to earn college credit and/or advanced placement while still in high school.  The curriculum for this course aligns with The College Board requirements.  Students are encouraged to compete in various national art competitions as well as Texas VASE and TAPPS contests.
  • Beginning 3D Art: Sculpture and Ceramics

    This course introduces the fundamentals of three-dimensional art, including historical background, vocabulary, materials, tools, the methods of construction, and surface treatment.  Sculpture projects will employ the use of a variety of media including clay, wood, metal, glass, wire, found objects, etc., and are inspired by the study of established sculptors.  Ceramic instruction includes hand-building technique, coil and slab construction, introduction to wheel throwing, and glazing methods.  Emphasis will be placed on safety, respect, work ethic, creative expression, and aesthetic problem-solving.   Students are encouraged to compete in various national art competitions as well as Texas VASE and TAPPS contests.
  • Advanced 3D Art

    This course allows students to build on knowledge gained in the introductory class.  Students will be encouraged to explore complex sculptural techniques using a wide variety of materials, and to experiment with advanced methods of ceramic construction.  During the second semester, students will begin to concentrate on a particular area of interest and to develop a portfolio.  Emphasis will be placed on safety, respect, work ethic, creative expression, experimentation, and aesthetic problem solving.  Participation in VASE and TAPPS competitions is encouraged.
